    iSad

This was on my facebook wall last night. The Onion was speedy with this..  somehow though it just seems rude to me (i'm not saying it isn't funny.. but it feels wrong to laugh).

The amount of iDead or cloud technology jokes.. craziness. I'm not sure why I'm so saddened by Steve Jobs' passing. I mean, it is always sad when someone dies and I do love Apple products.. but I think perhaps knowing that he was only 56 and he has 4 kids is what makes me genuinely sad. Also, he seemed like a nice guy and seemed down to earth, accessible, approachable..  He stepped down from his role at Apple in late August.. he didn't have much time between then and when he died.

    This disgusts me:

..and the fact that they used an iPhone makes it even worse. Ew, I briefly looked at Megan Phelps' twitter and #@#$@$?!?!@#!. It makes me so angry. Comments about 'fag weddings' and Steve Jobs being in hell.. I hope God kicks her in the balls (well, head maybe) when she dies.

It is funny how 'ballsy' means courageous or tough, and yet the balls are so not tough. In fact, they need protecting during sports and are super sensitive. Odd. Oh language. How I love thee. Oxymorons.. jumbo shrimp, butthead..

I think I wrote about this once before.. how some celebrity deaths affect people more than others. A good friend of mine was really devastated by Anna Nicole Smith's passing. Many people were saddened by Michael Jackson. I remember my aunt was glued to the news about Princess Di. Speaking of MJ.. I saw Anderson's show yesterday about Michael Jackson's doctor's trial. The drug in question is propofol. My dad was on propofol when he was kept sedated after his heart attack in 2008. Scary to think that someone would take it recreationally. In my opinion, blaming this deal on the doctor is unfair--but what do I know. It is true that he should have had better heart monitoring equipment present and it is likely that he should have administered that drug at all.. that said, don't celebs just get what they want? Isn't MJ the one who requested the drugs and then wanted more and more and more? I get that what happened is wrong.. but does that mean that Conrad Murray should now be penelized? I'm not sure.. and i guess that is why a jury is involved. The trial should last 8 more weeks or so.

Speaking of God...to each their own obviously..  but how about ghosts? Has anyone seen that show Long Island Medium on TLC? I am science-y and tend to not believe in ghosts/UFOs etc. I'm too realistic or something. My mom was the same way.. in fact, she was even black/white on this issue than I am. So this had me wondering, say I would be around Theresa (the medium on the show who is constantly telling people various things their loved ones want to convey) I don't think she'd have a message for me from my mom, because my mom wouldn't want to tell her, because that would mean she was wrong about ghosts/spirits theories etc. hahaha. Oh the things I ponder sometimes. Silliness.

This morning someone told me a story of a 16 year old kid having court ordered community service (for getting pulled over in a car that had beer in the trunk). So far that seems fair, right? Now what if I added that the community service given was burying people?! I was shocked. I even asked to clarify.. 'you mean digging graves?'. No no.. the holes were made, this is putting dirt on top of the caskets. Now why and how should a 16 year old KID have to do this? Seriously!?! This kid is now apparently in therapy..  not surprising if you ask me. I don't understand this at all! The parents are probably going to sue the town.. good for them!

In other news, looks like my old bed frame will be sold for $50 this evening Woohoo!

I started clicking through my 'friends' and 'subscribers' for this site and of course it turns out that I have 306 friends, 280 subscriptions and 299 subscribers. I wish there was an easy way to just compare all three lists and find the discrepancies. At the same time it feels like at least 505 people have moved on to other places, haven't updated in over a year or don't look remotely familiar to me anymore. I guess that is what I get for having joined Xanga in 2003. I will be going through and cleaning up and deleting these people as friends/subscribers to this site and unsubbing from theirs. This site is accessible by anyone, however it still seems weird to have my updates go by email daily to people to stopped blogging in 2006. My all-girls-only other anonymous site is obviously even more controlled (message me if you have boobs and want more info). Anyhow, if you happen to read but never comment let me know and I won't delete you.

  • We're registered at Linens n' Things. We have plenty of linens. We only want the things.

This morning on my way to work I noticed that they're opening up a CB2 right on the block I walk down twice a day. Goodbye savings. I kid! That said, this does likely mean that I will be buying both THIS branch mat for by the door, as well as THIS pebble one for the bathroom. I'll drool at their sectional couch, love their sheets, wish for this lamp, and basically ignore that the store is there. I mean, I walk by Urban Outfitters daily as well and am near a Container Store. And I pass Magnolia Bakery at Bloomingdale's without stopping. I can do this!

My office sublets its space from a larger company and we get to use the larger company's cafeteria. It is awesome! So many snacks, microwaves, ramen soup, oatmeal, cereal, grapes and other fruits, candy bars, bags of chips, graham crackers, granola bars, juices, lemonade, 10 types of milk.. they go all out and it is all free! However, since we moved here (over 20 months ago) the drip coffee has been pretty disgusting. I have either purchased coffee (iced or a latte) on my way to the office, or I have used the Gevalia pads to make something sort of drinkable. The strange thing is, their drip coffee is Peets brand which from a Peets store, I like a lot. This past weekend however they revamped, and now are serving Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Peets coffee. All I can say is that the Dunkin Donuts coffee is delicious! I'm so spoiled and happy.

Someone (not on Xanga) said that my new glasses looked like grandma glasses. I assure you, they do not. I suspect it was just the reflection of the lenses in that photo. Here's a better picture of the purple Fendi's. I challenge anyone to have a grandma who wears those

In other news, I really like tilapia and so THIS saddens me, and also.. wouldn't Oscar the Grouch do? Why have a new poor Sesame Street character?

Ok, I know that I maybe shouldn't share this, but I got THE. FUNNIEST. EMAIL. from my dad this morning. We have a canary in Amsterdam who was initially known as Shady (named by my Eminem loving younger sister). Then he was renamed Steinbeck after a funny mixup by my grandmother regarding Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row. Sadly a while back the bird developed a foot infection and had to have one leg amputated. Ever since he has been known as Pogo. H. is my sister and T. is her boyfriend. Now, read the exerpt and laugh, my friends:

"The WEIRDEST thing happened this morning. I got up early and was a bit thirsty so went down to the kitchen and the first thing I saw was that Pogo was huddled on the windowsill between the corkscrew you gave me and a potted basil plant that refuses to be used up. But his cage was closed! I took off the birdbath and caught him easily and put him back inside. He seemed very relieved. And then I thought I had solved the mystery: T. must have come in after work late last night and bumped his head on the cage and broken it open, or knocked off the birdbath, and then tried to catch the bird and given up. But no, neither he nor H. had anything to do with Pogo last night! So either Pogo has been watching Prison Break on the neighbors' tvs, or else it's a miracle! If it happens again he can qualify for sainthood. Saint Pogo."

    LOL. I my dad.

My coworkers are talking about duck hunting and how feeding ducks is the worst thing one can do for them because it prevents them from flying south. At least the conversation moved from how Michael Moore is a tool and Rush Limbaugh isn't. UGH.. sometimes I really despise these idiots.

  • This is the 2nd pair of glasses I got. This was the free pair from the buy one, get one..  Excuse the bad pictures.

Ooh, and you can see one of the feathers in my hair, too. LOL.

Based on the lack of comments from my last post i'm guessing most of you either hated my new glasses, or didn't like the new bed. LOL. Perhaps y'all like these better? haha

So last night I watched RHofBH and all I can say is OMG. The new women? HOLY YIKES! Crude, tacky.. I mean, when I'm agreeing with Camille you know something is wrong, right?

I still need to buy a mattress for my moat bed. I pass by a sleepy's on my way home from work, but yesterday it was raining and the guy inside just didn't seem like someone i wanted to go lay on beds with. Well not with, but .. I don't know. I am procrastinating this task clearly. I better go find out what kind of mattress i want today though because while my moat bed is actually totally fine, i did get this new frame so I'd have a bigger bed.. not so i'd have room for window boxes..

I figure i'll see what I like at Sleepy's and then call 1800mattress for their quote. I can always order from Sleepy's by phone as well.

Anyone in the NYC area need a full sized bed frame? I have one I am tossing out..  I suppose I can put it on Craigslist for $50 and see what happens too..

  • I had a very fun and productive weekend. On Saturday I had brunch with the girls at THIS place where I had never been before. The confusion when the plans were being made was very funny. My friend emailed: "Locale?" and so I wrote back: "sure, how about place x, y or z. Or we could go to this place or this one.." and then my friend replied: "check out Locale. Couldn't we just go there?". LOL. That is when I realized the place was called Locale. I'm a moron sometimes.

While the manager was terrible, our server was very nice and the food was yummy. I had something called a Freddy Kruger (which is a bloody mary with blue cheese stuffed olives and pepper on the rim of the glass). It was $2 more than the regular Bloody Mary and was more hotsaucy tasting than horseradish but, while delicious, didn't taste any better.. so I had a regular Bloody Mary for the 2nd round. The other girls had Mango Mimosa's and we all had eggs benedict (which my friend claims is the best thing to have on a 1st time brunch visit since she can measure brunch quality by the eggs benedict they serve). I imagine i'll go back to Locale again. Upon arrival we dropped the ketchup on the ground which was embarrassing. They were nice about it, but then when our server was giving us the specials her manager was standing off to the side signing at her as if she was causing world war three. Turned out, one of the specials had changed and that was what the international sign for "HELP CALL 911" was being used for by manager-chick. Needless to say, I did not like manager chick.

After brunch my friend L and I went to Cohen's Optical and looked at glasses. I tried on oodles and bunches, went to another store, and then made my way back to Cohen's to buy.. wait for it.. PURPLE FENDI's...  LOL! Who would have thunk?! Soooo not me. However, they look good on me and I really like them. It was a buy one get one deal so I also got a pair of hipster-esque brown rimmed glasses.

    Purple Fendi's. Ha!

This is not the pair I ended up getting but it is a pair I considered getting as the free pair before getting the brown rimmed ones (sorry, no pic for now. They look a little like the Langston pair down below though).

After selecting the glasses I had time to kill before picking them up so my friend and I hopped the subway and ran another errand at the mall. While there we went in Target and while I was sad that they had no Missoni anything anywhere, they did have this kids shower curtain (which I am happy to say I now proudly own). Ha! Yes, i bought the monkey hangers too..   teehee.  I already miss my old SAT Prep one, which I LOVE and have had for 6 years..and am washing and keeping). Pics of new and old below.

On Sunday morning I woke up and then checked out that Craigslist Pottery Barn Sumatra bedframe ad AGAIN. I decided to email again, this time from a different email address. I got a super friendly reply within 20 min. One cousin who met me with his car about an hour later, I was driving down to the storage facility in Brooklyn to spend $500 on the bed that was $1100 ($1400+ with tax and shipping online). WOOHOO! I got to the storage place and at first the seller wasn't there and wasn't answering. Thankfully she called me back 10 min later very apologetic (blaming her iPhone). 10 min after that she arrived with her two (cute) kids and husband in tow. We went up to the unit and it turned out that the footboard was much more scratched than she remembered. She felt genuinely bad for having misrepresented the frame and she knocked $100 off the price. I bought it for $400.

We got the various parts outside and then while trying to fit it all in the car, the headboard actually fell over and cracked. I felt like SUCH a moron. It was an accident but EEK. Remember when I bought the lamp from Craigslist and smashed it on my front door once I got ALMOST home? This felt similar. Thankfully it didn't damage the bed from wroking in any way and the wood is already distressed so it isn't even THAT noticable.

After pushing and shoving for over 45 min we finally got the headboard in the SUV (with the leg sticking out the window and the back tied shut with yarn) and we drove back to my place. My cousin was SO helpful it was insanely nice.

Last night when my two male friends came over to watch The Amazing Race I had them help me build the bed real quick. I still need to buy a queen sized mattress and I need to get rid of the old bed (which is now in my livingroom) but here it is.. my MOAT bed

Here is a picture of the scratched (by a dog) footboard:

and this is the crack that happened when the wind blew the headboard over:

It isn't the best picture.. but yeah, that's it.

I've been watching The Wire Season 2 and loving it so far. I'm about half way through the season. The Good Wife has also been good this season.. and in general, it is nice to have the fall TV season back again!

This dancer is amazing by the way:

And this is both funny and sad:

Okay, time to get more work done at the office. I hope you all had nice weekends! Congrats to @NinaBeana26 on the baby boy, and congrats to @Oceanstarr on the wedding!  My purple Fendi's and I are having a good first day.. also, fall has arrived. It is officially cold in NYC. Yay! Happy Monday!

  • I spy with my lil' astigmatism'd eye..

So yesterday I went to Lenscrafters and got my eye exam. I walked out knowing that I have better than average eye sight (20/15), as well as a prescription. LOL. I have astigmatism (did anyone NOT just think of the Accuvue contacts commercial? haha). Sadly I can't just get reading glasses at CVS since the two eyes vary slightly.. but it was nice to see things less blurry (although the prescription is minimal: +0.25). Apparently wearing the glasses or not wearing them will not make my eyes better or worse which is nice. I'm thinking of them mainly as computer glasses--since that is the only place I really notice that i'm seeing a little blurry and end up squinting. That said, they'll be good for driving at night too I bet. I wonder if i'll end up wearing them all the time..  I guess we'll see. I really value seeing things sharp. The optometrist took me outside with the lenses and I realized that I was seeing things in the distance slightly blurry as well.. who knew?!

The optometrist also advised me to wear sunglasses--even in the winter time because i have pinguecula. So both for cosmetic reasons as well as to not have cataracts later in life.. i need to UVprotect my eyes. A downfall of having blue/green eyes she said. They're nice and big and clear pupils.. perfect for the sun. I have a brownish spot in my eye already and spots in the other eye that aren't visible to me.. but for cosmetic reasons as well as to protect my eyes I should wear sunglasses I suppose. This will take getting used to for sure.

"Eye Bumps" - Pinguecula and Pterygium (the description and photo below were copied from the link)

Pinguecula (Eye Bumps)The most commonly encountered "bump" on the eye concerning patients is a fleshy-appearing growth called a pinguecula (ping-gwek-u-lah). They may be yellow, gray, white, or colorless. They are usually found on the white part of the eye in the space between the eyelids, almost always on the side closest to the nose. Pingueculae are more common in middle-aged or older people but they can also be found in younger people and even children.

     Causes

Overlying the white part of the eye (sclera) is a transparent mucous membrane called the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva also lines the inside of the eyelids. A pinguecula is a slow growth caused by the degeneration of the conjuctiva's collagen fibres. Thicker yellow fibres, or in some cases calcified deposits, eventually replace the original transparent fibres. In rare cases, the conjunctiva can also become red and irritated. Pingueculae can be found in one or both eyes and do not affect vision.

The exact cause or causes of this disorder is unknown, but it occurs more frequently in people who live in sunny and windy climates and people whose jobs expose them to ultraviolet (UV) light (for example, farmers and arc welders). The frequency of pingueculae increases with age lending credence to the idea that they are primarily the result of prolonged exposure to UV, infrared light and irritation.

The eye doc overall was very complientary of my eyes. haha.. i'm not even sure what that means, but she was! She said that my pics came out perfect (the reflection that showed on the pics was a perfect 10). She said that that was very cool for her to see--as an eye doc dork.  I ended up paying $118 for the exam -- they give a 20% discount for those without vision insurance. It was perhaps steep, but totally worth it to know why I'm seeing blurry and to know that soon I will see everything perfectly sharp. I also was given samples of tears and told to make sure I blink while at the computer or watching TV and to break to apply the tears once in a while.

I tried on some pairs of glasses at the Lenscrafters yesterday however the doc had dilated my pupils so it was hard to see. The black pairs all looked very harsh. There was a grey pair that looked okay, as well as a red Burberry pair.. but they were both very expensive and I couldn't see properly. I need a friend to come with me and help me pick what looks best. Some of the no-frame ones looked good too--but I felt like those are more for older people, no? Plus, i'll likely bend them too much...  plastic somehow seemed like a better option. Who knows. I'll check out Pearl Vision this weekend (they have a 2 for 1 deal) as well as a bigger Lenscrafters. I'll bring a friend for feedback too.

I had a very funny conversation with my sister on my blackberry on my way home. I could NOT read what the blackberry said (I also had no clue what time it was). It was so crippling. I could see I had emails, but could not read them. I did somehow figure out that it was my sister who was messaging me. I was writing to her without being able to read what I could write. I must say--i am good at blind typing on the BB. Eventually I blindly upped the font size on my BB and after 2 hours I was back to seeing normally. To you 4eyed pros I must sound like an idiot not (finding this all so new) but I'd never had that done before.. it was strange. I wished I had been drunk cause it kind of felt like I was.

WarbyParker sells glasses for $95 online and for every pair bought, they donate a pair. I think this is pretty cool (it's like Toms shoes but with glasses sorta) and so I may go that route.. yesterday at Lenscrafters I tried on a couple of pairs and didn't really like any of them that much. The non frame ones overall tended to look better but WP doesn't sell those so below are some options from the site..just for fun..    I need rounded frames (can be sort of square, but rounded..no sharp corners).

That last two pictures are just for a laugh. LOL. I'm not really seriously considering any of these but the Langston I don't think.. but I need to try some on at the store first.

I'm about to go meet my mom's old friend from college--a family friend--(who happens to be the publisher for the London Review of Books) for lunch. He's in NYC for business and he called. Neato! This is the man who taught me how to eat peas one at a time when I was younger. That and the poem: "I eat my peas with honey, i've done so all my life. It makes the peas taste funny, but it keeps them on the knife". He was also a speaker at my mom's funeral.. he's know me my whole life and he loved my mom and is a good friend to my dad.. it'll be nice to have lunch and catch up.

In other news, last night I watched the X Factor and I have NEVER said this about a complete stranger before, but I would totally marry Josh Krajcik. Hahaha. Sure, he's a lil' greasy looking and that V neck shirt he was wearing HAS to go, but his demeanor was nice and laid back, he loves his mom and his voice amazed me. He's the one who sang Etta James' At Last. Here he is:

Since it is Rosh Hashana and my office is practically empty (why _am_ I here today?!) I may be back with more glasses pictures after lunch..

  • I've noticed that my vision is off. Usually toward the end of the day, but mostly when I look at the laptop monitor (I use two monitor's at the office. One large one in front of me and the laptop screen which is to the left, is lower, and set further back). I tend to have work stuff open on the main screen and xanga/facebook/gmail open on the laptop screen. Lately toward the end of the day my vision gets blurry and I no longer can easily and quickly see whether something is an 8 or a 6 on the laptop screen. Reading requires more concentration than usual and I find myself squinting. I have always had great vision so this is beyond annoying to me.

I do not have insurance for vision. My company doesn't provide it. I called the eye doctor who i saw in 2005 (i had a pressure issue for a day or two back then so i had my eyes checked out) to ask what an eye exam would cost. I was told $175. Now here's what I'm wondering. Does it make sense to pay $175 and see a doc, or should I start off by going to Lenscrafters or Pearl and see what they say? They do eye exams as well, right? I suspect I will need computer glasses. Last night when I was trying to decipher whether the blurriness was only at the desk, or also out on the street or when watching TV I started realizing how much of my life is spent looking at screens. It is terrible! At work from 8.30-6:30 i'm behind 2 screens, when away from my desk my Blackberry basically is my 11th finger and then when i'm home generally the TV is on or i'm behind a computer/iPad. Is it strange that now that I realized this, I sort of hate it?

Back in 2005 when I got my eyes tested I was told that i am .25 far sighted in one eye and I have perfect vision in the other. I liked this because this meant I could spot what number bus or which subway was arriving before other people.. and the far sightedness was so minimal that I didn't need glasses. Anyhow, I need to get an eye exam now pronto. Not having good eye sight is not something I will settle for. Sorry if I sound like a princess here.. but i've dealt with enough teeth issues throughout my life that not having glasses was only fair karma wise

Google Chrome keeps crashing on me. I have been using Firefox instead but am disappointed in Chrome. I want it to work the way it used to but am lazy as far as un- and re-installing it. I wish for Chrome not to suck!  LOL.

In other news, I HATE timestampers on Xanga. I think I will unsub to them all. I keep missing posts because I think in my sub list that I got to the last one read, but then later realize it was just a post that was re-time-stamped and I missed people's updates. Silly attention (aka comment) seekers!

Did anyone see the RHOBH episode? What was WRONG with Kim at the Kings game? I wanted to smack her. I usually like her but that was just insane. Adrienne has a lot of patience! Also, Lisa was so rude to Taylor at the charity event, but why didn't Taylor just say: "thank you for your concern. This isn't the place to discuss this. I am here for Kyle and want to have a good time"? As for the Brandi introduction.. i don't like bullies or mean girls, but seriously, who DOES wear a cast with a heel (wedge or stiletto)?

I've been thinking of dumping the contents of one of my savings accounts into a CD account. The highest interest I see currently is 1.5% with a credit union for 12 or 18 months. Is it worth approx $150 to open this account and keep track of when the terms are up and stuff? Not to mention I've never heard of this credit union? Hrrm, i'll let that one percolate too.

No reply from my CL bed person...  yet. Fingers are still crossed!

To the jews among us, Happy New Year or Shana Tova!

Update: I have an eye exam for $135 at Lenscrafters at 5PM today. If I end up needing glasses they'll give a 30% discount as well as the fact that my health insurance is partnered with them so glasses would be cheaper. We'll see what I need.. there was a $75 basic exam and a $135 intensive one. When I told the guy I was seeing blurry he insisted I get the $135 exam. i'm getting my retina scanned, y'all. LOL.  Lets uncross the bed fingers and cross the eye sight fingers for now, kay?

  • everybody all together now..

So remember (or maybe not) how a while ago I posted about a bed that I wanted to buy?  Well, we're now months later and I still am sleeping the same ol' full sized-slides-away-from-the-wall-and-is-crappy bed. I was talking to a coworker who was considering buying a TV stand from Craigslist and we were discussing the pickup (she doesn't have a drivers license). I was offering my Zipcar services and then she suggested going to Ikea together. She was asking if I needed anything from Ikea and I couldn't really think of anything. I mentioned I still need a bed but nothing from Ikea. She then suggested I look on Craigstlist. Now, those who have been reading a while know that last year when my 2BR with a roomie turned into my own blissful ridiculous 2BR for just me I went a little Craigslist bonkers. I got cool stuff though too! Since then, and since I do not need any furniture, I have stopped looking regularly (or at all).

So the bed saga is basically that I need something heavy and sturdy (so that the uneven flooring doesn't matter as much) and I don't like feeling wood in the back of my knee when sitting on the edge of the bed (the Ikea Malm). I've looked at a lot of websites and this one Pottery Barn bed keeps sticking out.. So Pottery Barn  sells the Sumatra bed which costs $1099 - $1299 as well as the Sumatra II bed $699 - $999. I had been eying the Sumatra II however with tax and shipping and all that jazz it costs $1000.14 which I still think is steep (especially since i'd have to get a mattress separately). On top of that, it has been on back-order so it would take forever to arrive.

As luck would have it, there is a Queen sized Sumatra bed for sale on Craiglist for *drumroll please* $500 in Brooklyn. It was posted yesterday.

I emailed the seller and hopefully (pleasepleaseplease) it is still available.

I would never buy a 2nd hand mattress from a stranger, but the wooden frame? Sure! I'm still trying to figure out why exactly the Sumatra 1.0 is twice as expensive as the Sumatra 2.0. One difference is that the 2.0 requires a box spring and the 1.0 does not. The 1.0 also has a wider/thicker headboard (more wood = more expensivo I suppose). But other than that? They look pretty similar to me!

Anyhow, everybody all together now.. fingers crossed please!
And if this works out and I get this bed for a major discount, i'll still go to Ikea cause i'll be needing some new fitted sheets

And a mattress. haha. What kind of mattress do you sleep on? Do you like foam? tempurpedic? Sealy? Serta? Do share!

  • The NYC Crazies

I had the most sloth-like weekend ever. Any and all plans I had were basically out the window. It was ridiculously muggy out all weekend (72F but feels like 92F, grey and overcast and lovely things like that) and so to avoid feeling like I was melting I pretty much just watched a marathon (practically the entire first season me thinks) of Sister Wives from the comfort of my couch. Oh, I also talked to my dad for an hour and a half on the phone. So fun! I miss him. And then on Sunday there was the rude pigeon awakening. I need to do something about this. Both windows that have AC units screwed into them have a pigeon landing strip or a pigeon lounge or something where they enjoy hanging out. Perhaps it is bird karaoke since they coo a lot too. The outside part of the AC is covered in sh*t and they make the most awful sounds. Stupid sky rats! On Sunday at 7.45AM I startled awake wondering why it was hailing..only to realize that it wasn't. 3 pigeons were having a turf war over under and on the AC in my bedroom. The noise was astounding (I promise, waking me up out of a deep sleep ain't easy). I need to do something about the problem. Next time I have more than two hands at my house i'll try either anti-bird tape, bleach, some kind of spikes or a robotic owl or something. I could try an ultrasonic bird house but what about the dogs in the building? Would they be bothered too? In the mean time I may hang up some CDs as someone suggested on Facebook that they don't like shiny things. Effing pickya*s flying rats.. don't mind sleeping in piles of sh*t but don't like disco balls? Figures.

I made it outside once for a double feature movie extravaganza and dinner. A friend and I saw both Drive and.. (now now.. no laughing) The Lion King 3D. So fun! Drive was very good (and shot very nicely) however I had issues with it. There was very little dialogue and it was hard to empathize with most of the characters. In fact, I couldn't really feel for any of them and I didn't understand their motives much. There were many unrealistic situations and it was at times uber slow. I did enjoy the movie though and I didn't walk out wanting my money or 2 hours back. It was just odd I guess.. but good odd. After the movie we had Crapplebees (where I realized I had not been since 2001). They had yummy sliders..but I can't exactly recommend chain places like that. It's funny how I am ok with Chili's and TGIs. I like Olive Garden and have never been to Red Lobster. I think everyone has their own faves. In general I just avoid places like that. Especially in NYC where the prices are all jacked up because Manhattan is thpeshial like that.

When my sister was younger she went through a phase where she watched the Lion King every day for a year. I think I know that movie almost as well as I know Grease, West Side Story and Dead Poets Society "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts, deedle dee dee". Seeing the movie in 3D was awesome and the kids laughing along in the theater were great. At one point some baby started crying and when the guardian/parent didn't remove the kid after a couple of minutes someone said "Take the baby out!" and they did. Why they didn't figure that out on their own I was not sure, but it was funny to be in the movies with so many youngens (even though it was 9.30PM). I noticed that my friend and I were in the adult section up in the back.

Alright, as you can tell I don't have too much to write about from the weekend (since I didn't do anything).. I watched the Amazing Race premiere as well as The Good Wife and Desperate Housewives (yay new Sundays! and with The Good Wife on Sunday now I don't even miss Brothers and Sisters...which ended). I also researched Online non-GMAT required MBA programs and filled out an info request from Rochester Institute of Technology. Their main admissions requirement is to have above a certain GPA and whether its repression or just forgetfulness.. i'm not sure what my GPA actually was (8 years ago when I graduated college). So, I asked my old alma matter for a copy of my transcript. Who knows--we'll see what happens. Seemed like a good place to start. I mean, 15 months of hard work for an MBA sounds pretty neat (and better than 22 Months) and it is a good school.. however this could potentially cost around $56k.. Uncool.  I'll let it percolate (and see whether my old school even has it together enough to get me that transcript).

So, I work in midtown Manhattan and every day (or almost every day) I see this grown man (he must be at least 60) on a turquoise children's sized bike either standing in front of a bar with what looks like a Malibu Baybreeze (a pink cocktail served in a beer stein with an umbrella and straw) or just biking around. Sometimes he wears a thawb, sometimes he wears womens clothing and sometimes he looks like he is an alien. Today however, he was practically naked.

This man terrifies me enough that I don't venture close, and sadly my Blackberry isn't the best long-distance photo taker..

here he is today, almost nude

and this was him a few weeks ago, in pink strappy glittery girls sandals and a thawb. So weird!! Mind you his knees hit the handle bars since the bike is tiny.

Finally I'll leave you with this.. I was walking home a week or two ago and I found myself walking behind this:

She actually _is_ wearing shorts however they are so far up her butt, and they are skin colored beige that one has to strain to even see them. Also, she was 16 or so. Just both old and young enough for this to be wildly inappropriate.

The person in Florida who keeps viewing this site is starting to be a little creepy! Show yourself! haha. Say hi! Then again, there's already some Minnesotan doing the same thing.. I guess without any site protection I should just get used to it.

Speaking of which.. want to see how/why i'm an idiot sometimes? I kind of forgot about the whole "EXPLORE" tab on the xanga main page. So first off I was shocked when I realized that my blog had been featured there and readers came over from that page..  then I realized i'm a dumbdumb cause I used to read that page all the time and find new fun people to sub to through there. I think I used to be a better xanga-er. Then again, I think y'all were too

  • Ugh. Don't piss me off! TGIF

I rarely post anything about work since I don't ever want to get in trouble and this blog isn't privatized or hidden in any way. That said, this morning has been worthy of venting so here it goes: Two of the guys I work with are at a conference in GA. The conference conveniently arranged for free shuttles to take people to and from the airport (since it is 1.5+ hr drive from the airport). I signed them up last week for a shuttle at 12:30pm. Today I received confirmation for a 1.30PM shuttle. I called to ask nicely about the change (which isn't ok because they will miss their flight) and I didn't even get as much as a sorry. That said, they are now on a noon shuttle (which sort of stinks since they wanted to be able to network from 11:45AM-12:15PM after their panel session, but what option did I have really?). Oh well. The place should have offered to send a car for them at 12:30PM as originally scheduled. Especially because I did already pay them for one of the rides to the conference since the guy was getting in late (and after the complimentary shuttle ended). I could have gone with another company (like the one I normally use) or we could have just rented a car. Ah hind sight... a rental would have been better I suppose. I thought people in the south were friendly and accommodating though? This was far from.

Then I receive a call from a staffing agency that actually made me post a YELP review (the 2nd one i've ever written):

    9/23/2011

RUDE!  I received a call from USS re: whether my company hires temporary assistants. When I said we do not I got a gruff "OK" and a hang up. What happened to a polite "Alright, I thank you for your time" or a goodbye or thanks or have a nice day or  something? I listened to your intro, to your question.. then I answered you and you're gonna hang up on me? EW.

I called our 401k broker with a question. They gave me a decent answer and advised I check with the provider as well. I emailed the plan manager only to be told: "I am not sure when I would be able to contact you due to my schedule today. It would be better if you called the account management team directly. Our contact number is xxx and any representative can assist you." Bleh. Fine. So I call the number and am given the most useless answer ever. I then go back to the broker and they are totally helpful and give me the exact information I needed the first time around. Could they not have done that from the get go?

The guy from the company down the hall is screaming. I can hear him here.. "i'm done with him! F*ck that!"  He occasionally loses his cool. His assistant actually flees the office when this happens. It is kind of funny to watch. He is big loud and scary though so I get it.

I was supposed to meet a Dutch friend for dinner on Wednesday night however because of phone glitches I guess it didn't work out (well and she also said she'd been invited somewhere for dinner so our dinner plans turned into a drink.. but in the end that didn't happen). We then were trying to meet up and I replied to her email her way late last night (my bad) about lunch today. I haven't heard back so I guess I won't see her this time around. Oh well. Instead of meeting her on Wednesday I ended up having a lovely evening with a friend eating sushi and watching Survivor (after picking up my weekly share of CSA veggies--which included more apples than i'd ever know what do with as well as something called Jerusalem artichokes which looked like ginger to me. I gave a bunch of the stuff to my friend who came over since there was simply no way I would consume all the goodies before next Wednesday.

I just tried to email our compliance officer and got a return email that my email was not received because his mailbox is full. SERIOUSLY!? What is wrong with this day?  So.. I think all I really have to say is TGIF!!!  It is 72 degrees and pouring in New York City today but according to weather.com it feels like 88 degrees. I believe it. It is so humid and sticky. This

morning when I was walking to work from the subway (before it started pouring) I seriously felt like i was melting. So gross!

In other completely random WTF news.. yesterday on the train back from Stamford after delicious Indian food and fun times with my friend, I was reading People magazine and came across this picture of Enrique Iglesias. Seriously?! WTF?! Who takes their German Shepard jet skiing? And without a life vest at that.. bwahaha.

Because of the weather a couple of coworkers and I decided to order in for lunch. We ordered grilled cheese sandwiches from Melt Shop. I can't wait for my warm gooey heart attack to arrive. I seriously can not wait for the weekend! Tonight I have a date with my couch and the Grey's Anatomy premiere and Jersey Shore episode as well as the dirty dishes in my sink I suppose. Perhaps I'll give the dishes a rain check till tomorrow.. the house needs some cleaning in general and I still need to go through my dresser and closet and get rid of the stuff I don't wear and figure out where my fall clothes are hiding out. I'm hoping to also catch one last Mets game this weekend as well as a couple of parties I have been invited to. This weekend promises to be both fun and relaxing. I'm muy excited!

  • many ramblings about not very much

Someone in Florida keeps checking my site. Hi Floridian! *waves*.

I don't have a whole lot to write about this week it seems. I had a post written earlier this week about the show I saw last Friday and about the weekend, but my browser crashed and with it the post died. I decided it wasn't interesting enough to recreate.

That said, the weekend was good. In short, my friend's show was fun..  My friend E. and I went together -- the show involves a family style dinner and we were seated at a table with a middle aged couple. They were kind of insufferable, especially the wife. She was a complete name dropper and she wasn't eating anything. I think she just annoyed me from the get go.. coming across all pretentious and what not. The kicker for me (once I got passed the remarks like "Deeprak and I were working together") was that she said she was on the faculty at Harvard and MIT. I then asked her if she was from the Boston area (seemed like a reasonable question to me). Apparently that insulted her as she snidely told me that no.. she was from New York. She told me she makes it up there about once a month, perhaps less. (Actually, what she said was "I guess I make it up there about once a month, right honey?" she needed her hubby to sign off on everything she said. It was odd and beyond irritating). Now, an adjunct maybe, or someone who gives workshops.. sure.. but WHO can be on the faculty at Harvard and be there less than once a month?!? At one point I was telling a story and she interrupted with a "well but that isn't philanthropy" comment and instead of explaining to her what I meant (which WAS philanthropy) I actually just dropped it figuring it wasn't worth it. I got a chuckle later when I realized how stupid she was (and her hubby too). Faculty at Harvard my ass. LOL. She had no idea what a 'dramaturg' is. I am fine with someone not knowing, however HER not knowing was wonderful considering how into theater she supposedly was. Pretentious snot that she was. Ugh--clearly this woman brought out the best in me. Like i said, I didn't care for her much. LOL. The night however was far from ruined. I had a really enjoyable time, the food was good and the show was funny, well acted, well sung and all in all just an interesting concept.. certainly fun.

In other news, I have a flight to Richmond, VA booked for a weekend in October to go hang out with my gay facebook husband in his new home (and my birth place). In November I will be traveling home to Amsterdam for some Dutch turkey. I'm looking forward to both of these trips greatly.

Speaking of facebook.. everyone (including me) is up in arms over their new layout. I don't really care what their layout does or doesn't do however I suspect this may make me comment/post less. The fact that now all of my friends can now see exactly where i posted a comment or what I 'liked' bothers me. On top of that.. I think all friends of the friend whose site I posted on (still with me?) can see it too. Lame!  What cracks me up is how aside from people complaining about FB there are also those who are complaining about the complainers.. as if that is somehow better?! I suppose what bothers me is that the part of facebook I have always been the least happy about is now heightened. I do not need or require live time updates on what I am doing on facebook.

In similar 'things are changing' news. I'm still unsure of what to do with Netflix. I hardly use it which makes me think I should just cancel the whole thing. That said though, I have friends that use my login, my TV has Netflix built in (convenient!) and for some odd reason I have some form of separation anxiety regarding canceling it. I contemplated having just the streaming (since I haven't been sending in the DVDs lately) however I think the movies on DVD are better than the ones that stream. Then I thought about having just the DVD option--however, the streaming is neat too. Mind you, I don't really use any of it often so considering that the new cost is $16 a month (or nearly $200 a year) I think it is time to cancel all of it? Maybe? When it comes to relatively unimportant stuff, I can be so indecisive sometimes. Haha.

Now that the finale of Hells Kitchen aired a few days ago, can I post a spoiler yet? I was happy that Elise did not win. To be honest, I had been rooting for Will the entire time--however when Paul mentioned he had made the promise to win to his mother who had since passed away, i felt for him and decided either Paul or Will could win and i'd be happy with the outcome.

Did anyone catch Teen Mom last night? First off, who is Gary's friend Evan? Why is he oddly cute? But also, why is he suggesting Gary serenade Amber? Has he met Amber? Was he on previous shows? I think we've all known for a very loong time that Amber and Gary are better off not together and last night once again proved that. Amber's tone of voice just changes when she gets on the phone with G. It's awful. By the by, did you know Amber makes 280k a year? Also, is she done trying to kill herself? As for Maci.. I still feel for her regarding the whole Ryan situation. He's a dummy. The best line of the show hands down was from Kyle: "Life's tough, get a helmet".  Why Farrah drove around during a snow storm prettying up all these places she argued with Sophia's dad is beyond me. Like a 2 year old is going to remember or enjoy that drive. Catelynn's outfit made my mouth fall open. Forget the hair cut. Forget the pink fake nails. Forget the ugly pattern on the shirt. Forget the face piercing. ..that scarf though. Was she serious?! Here's a screenshot:

Did anyone else read the article on Salon about how sperm banks are no longer accepting sperm from redheads? Odd.

Enough about that.. tonight I am meeting a Dutch friend for a drink. Then I may have a friend come over to watch Survivor (he doesn't have cable). We'll see. Tomorrow I have a meeting for work up in Stamford, CT and so after the meeting (which I scheduled at the end of the day) I will meet my friend for dinner before coming back down to NYC. NYC has been a mess this week with the UN and the president in town. I suppose the protests near Wall Street aren't helping much either. This weekend I have been invited to a bunch of parties so I will need to pick and choose I suppose.

I am a little bit scared to write this down but I am not superstitious so just forgive my vagueness. A friend and I have an idea for a business venture. It all sort of hinges on the space we'd want to rent.  We have put in a call to the owner and haven't heard back yet. If anyone would like to cross their fingers for us hearing back (and ideally being able to move forward with this plan) that would be great. Perhaps more on this later..

Well, time for me to go find some lunch. Mmm.. food  Tell me, did you bring or buy your lunch to work today. Or for those of you at home..  What do you have?
